Shar Allen Elected as At-large Delegate to National Convention! Minimize

Shar Allen, of the 47th District’s Griffith Precinct, was elected as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention for Barack Obama on June 15, one of just seventeen at-large delegates chosen from a field of over 380 candidates. The at-large delegates were elected by the national delegates chosen at the Congressional District Caucuses as part the State Convention held in Spokane.

Shar Allen works as a consulting accountant and has been a resident of the District since 2001. She lives in the Carriage Crest neighborhood with her husband Leland and their two children; son T.J. attends Bellevue Community College, while daughter Alexis is entering sixth grade. Shar has been an active volunteer at Carriage Crest Elementary, Northwest Harvest and the Union Gospel Mission.

Although she has always voted Democratic, this year marks Shar’s first foray into politics, Believing that “our country’s soul is at stake” in this election, and inspired by Barack Obama’s message and personal story, she attended her very first precinct caucus in February and “it changed my life.” She committed herself to getting to Denver if she possibly could, first running at the 8th CD Caucus in Covington, then making a full court press to get one of the at-large seats.

Shar attributes her success to sheer persistence and one-on-one contact. She attended every possible gathering of elected national delegates and even hosted one of her own; those who didn’t come to these events received phone calls and personal visits. She was especially encouraged by a long meeting with State Party Secretary Luis Moscoso, who told her that her own story and passion were exactly what Democrats need to have at the National Convention.

“This isn’t just about Barack Obama,” Shar observes, but she acknowledges that, as a multiracial American herself, she takes great pride in seeing his rise to leadership. She also notes that her brother, a United States Marine, met Senator Obama in 2006 while serving in Iraq and encouraged him to run for President, so there’s some family pride involved, too.

Shar’s commitment goes well beyond attending the Convention. Working with her mother, a native of Vietnam, she plans an active outreach to the Vietnamese-American and other Asian-American communities, who too often feel disconnected from the elections and/or tended to support other candidates in the primaries. She has already sponsored voter registration sessions in Kent, and was the lead organizer for the “Unity for Change” event on July 28. She has filed for election as Precinct Committee Officer for Griffith Precinct, with the full support of current PCO Evelyn Reymond.

It is always exciting to have one of our own among those making history at the national convention. The Democrats of the 47th District have good reason to be pleased about this passionate and effective new voice in our community.

Contribute to the KCDCC

The campaign season is in full swing and we have been busy — supporting the caucus/convention cycle, participating in candidate events and community festivals, and preparing for more. Help sustain a great, grassroots organization, the King County Democratic Central Committee that offers many services to the Democratic community such as the new judicial forum presented this year. Our website is used by Democrats across the county for checking events on our calendar, blogging activity, online weekly newsletters, and much more.   These activities require money, time, and resources and we would appreciate your help.

We need your help in preparing and conducting the campaign against the Republican-based Initiative 26. If I-26 were to pass, all King County government positions would become nonpartisan offices.

Please consider making a donation and becoming a member of a great organization.  Annual Membership Dues are $40.00. You may want to consider making a donation at a higher level to help sustain our organization.

A monthly donation program is available for those who wish to provide a steady flow of support throughout the year for as little as $10 per month. Secure donations can be made online here by clicking the gold DONATE button, or by sending a check to the address listed below. All members and sponsors will be listed in the monthly newsletter and be invited to special events and receptions.

Keeping the grassroots motivated and involved is an enormous venture. We ask you to become a member of KCDCC today! Our meetings are free and open to all Democrats; monthly meetings take place on the fourth Tuesday of each month at the Renton Carpenters Hall, 231 Burnett Avenue North in Renton, 7:00 pm.

Thank you for your past and current support as it helps in getting the Democratic message out into the community. If you have any questions, please call or write us.

Yours truly,

Susan C. Sheary

VOTE NO ON INITIATIVE 26 !
Op-Ed by the KCDCC Chair

We will review initiatives and propositions scheduled for November 4th ballots at the September 23rd meeting of the King County Democratic Central Committee.

One of particular interest to our Party is King County Initiative 26 –“ An ordinance proposing an initiative to amend the King County Charter to make the offices of King County Executive, King County Assessor and King County Council nonpartisan and to establish the nonpartisan selection of districting committee members,”

This is an attempt by a Republican Council Member, Republican special interest organizations, wealthy, and known-Republican, business people to take over the King County Government.  This is a ploy by the people who cannot win elections in King County because of the ”R” or “GOP” behind their names.  This is wrong!

This would deny the two major parties the right to field and support their own candidates.  This would also deny the people of King County the right to know the party affiliation of each candidate.  Passage of this initiative would also eliminate the need for candidates to be accountable regarding issues and their respective voting.  In plain and simple terms:  This is big money and business trying to buy all elective offices of King County Government.

The second phrase in the initiative would also buy them the “nonpartisan selection of districting committee members.”  Do you wonder what the District boundary lines will look like with big money folks in charge?

Stand with me and fight this initiative!  We must push back and preserve King County Government as we know it today – it works!!
